Anyone who visits Butre will not forget the striking ruins of the 1656-constructed Fort Batenstein, situated on a hill, with its magnificent views of the surrounding village, coast, lagoon, rock formations, forest, fields and hills.

Butre has it`s own Town Tourism Development Committee, which offers guided tours to Fort Batenstein and the local area. 
The low Entrance fees are paid directly to the people of Butre, supporting the maintenance of this historic landmark at the coast of Ghana.

The fort’s opening hours are 9:00am to 4:30pm.

Entrance fees are as follows:
Visitor Category Entrance Fee*

  • Pupils from Primary to JHS 3 GH¢ 0.50
  • SHS Students GH¢ 1
  • Tertiary Students with ID GH¢ 2
  • Ghanaian Adults GH¢ 5
  • Foreign Children USD 2 or its equivalent in Ghana cedis
  • Foreign Students with ID USD 7 or its equivalent in Ghana cedis
  • Adult Foreigners USD 10 or its equivalent in Ghana cedis
*Entrance fees were reviewed in February 2013, and may be now about 3 x more, due inflation. (Cedis payments, not US $)
