The fort is now partially in ruins, though key elements remain:
Bastions, partial wall sections, and inner chambers are still visible
Overgrown vegetation and erosion have damaged portions of the structure
The site was consolidated in 2010–2011 with support from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, helping stabilize and protect the remaining structures
Today, the fort is open to the public as a heritage tourism site, with access via a walking trail from Butre village. It offers spectacular panoramic views and a peaceful atmosphere for historical reflection.

Adaptation to Terrain: Unlike coastal forts, Batenstein is uniquely perched on a hilltop, showing strategic adaptation to topography.
Modest Scale: A small fort, built more for local control and observation than grand defense or administration.
Material Simplicity: Local stone and lime mortar construction reflects both the European building style and adaptation to local materials.
Military Simplicity: The layout is purely utilitarian, focused on defense, living quarters, and trade support — no ornamental architecture.
